Jazzwise July 2025 issue

Jazzwise magazine’s July issue celebrates iconic singer Nina Simone’s powerful songs and fearless embrace of civil rights in a special cover feature, with contemporary jazz vocalist China Moses expanding on the many facets of Nina’s enduring legacy today in a fascinating interview.

Also in the issue are features on pioneering bassist and Tomorrow’s Warriors co-founder Gary Crosby OBE, who looks back on his incredible career as he celebrates his 70th birthday year. There are interviews with multi-Grammy winning jazz banjoist Béla Fleck ahead of his July shows in London with his BEATrio, and renowned keyboardist Jason Miles delves into his storied career working alongside Miles Davis, Marcus Miller and Michael Brecker. Two modern day sax titans also feature in the issue with Joe Lovano selecting a transitional John Coltrane album as his musical Turning Point, while Joshua Redman opens up about his powerful new Blue Note set, Words Fall Short.

Alto sax ace Lakecia Benjamin picks her five favourite albums in Takes Five ahead of her headline show at Love Supreme Jazz Festival in early July, while UK composer Claire Cope is the one to watch in Taking Off. We also celebrate the incredible voice and music of Betty Carter in Return Flight, and in-demand US pianist Eric Scott Reed talks about his life in music in The Player.

All this plus the UK’s biggest album jazz reviews section, jazz news and gig guide…
